Integrity in Research

When reflecting on the phrase” integrity in research” I immediately think of the following phrase:”choosing between that which is right and wrong “when conducting anything related to research. According to “Research Integrity | WebGURU”, integrity forms the keystone of scientific research. Without it, the complexity of interrelated ideas that is scientific research; begins to disintegrate in an undesirable and unanticipated way (2018).

“Integrity in research” falls under a very vast spectrum and is not only limited to deciding between that which an individual considers to be right or wrong (Komić, Marušić & Marušić, 2015). It is governed by several principles that may enhance research integrity (Komić, Marušić & Marušić, 2015). However, should researchers neglect to use the principles as a guide; it may lead to the production of unreliable and invalid information (Komić, Marušić & Marušić, 2015).

As final year student physiotherapists we are required to complete a thesis proposal. In order to achieve this, an intensive amount of analysis of existing literature is required. As “practicing-researchers” we aim to base our thesis proposal on reliable and valid literature and prevent the production and publication of false or misleading research. Thus, as students, we aim to continue the cycle of maintaining a good standard of integrity throughout this process. In order to achieve this, we are educated regarding the principles we are expected to uphold in order to produce work that future researchers would be able to build on and use as a reliable source of guidance.

The following is a list of the principles of integrity in research (“Research Integrity | WebGURU”, 2018):

  1. Honesty and fairness in performing, proposing and reporting research;
  2. Fairness and accuracy in representing contributions to research reports and proposals;
  3. Fairness and proficiency in peer review;
  4. “Collegiality in scientific interactions, communications and sharing of resources” (“Research Integrity | WebGURU”, 2018).
  5. “Disclosure of conflicts of interest” (“Research Integrity | WebGURU”, 2018).
  6. “Protection of human subjects in the conduct of research” (“Research Integrity | WebGURU”, 2018).
  7. “Humane care of animals in the conduct of research” (“Research Integrity | WebGURU”, 2018).
  8. “Adherence to the mutual responsibilities of mentors and trainees” (“Research Integrity | WebGURU”, 2018).
