Retail supply chain accounts for nearly 95% of food waste in South Africa

Nearly a quarter of South Africans go to bed hungry each night, according to a South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The World Wide Fund for Nature estimates that of the 31 million tonnes of food produced in South Africa each year, 10 million tonnes go to waste.

How is it possible, that in a country where 25% of people go hungry every day, we can throw away 10 million tonnes of food every year?
