Åsa Resser – relations in rehabilitation and treatment

I chose this photo because it can have many meanings. The two main reasons that I chose this picture is because it reflects on using the nature for physical activity and rehabilitation, and that having good relations in for example the family will contribute positively to the rehabilitation. In this assignment I would like to focus on the last reason to why I chose the photo; the importance of good social relations.

For patients in the health system this reflection will symbolize to have somebody, e.g. a family member, friend, co-worker etc., might help during the rehabilitation process, and also before the rehabilitation is needed. When you usually hang out with somebody and construct a strong bond with them, it might open a door for talking about things that happen in your personal life. If you experience something that means you have to go through a rehabilitation process or to physiotherapy treatment, it might be easier to share with the people you´re already close to. This might also make the way back to normal life shorter. Whether it’s a friend or a family member, the follow up might help the person in therapy to stay focused on their goal to come back to the activities and daily life they used to attend.

These people can experience physiotherapy and rehabilitation as something less overwhelming. Considering they have somebody to talk to, outside of the rehabilitation team from the institution, they may share some parts of the process, and this way might relieve some of the pressure they might experience.

As the journalist Ann Jones wrote in the article “After I Lived in Norway, America Felt Backward” in 2016, the Norwegian healthcare system is well designed for the population. The work hours end in such a time that people have time for activities like a hike in the forest, a swim with the kids or a beer with friends. Things like these gives the population a possibility for a social life, and therefore being able to form the bonds I described earlier on. She also describes that people like their jobs, and this might contribute to motivation to get back to work after an injury or a total change in life situation, needing rehabilitation.

In rehabilitation, the close family can get even more responsibility than just being a friend. The role as a caretaker for the person in need is not unusual, especially in case of stroke. The family will get extensive information and training in taking care of the patient.

As Jones (2016) mentioned in her article, the taxes paid by the people, funds the welfare system. In addition, this gives the relatives the opportunities to optionally take time of work to be a full-time attendant.

  1. Hey, well done on getting your assignment together. Your assignment is good however there are some points where I think you can improve a little bit.
Content: Your content does relate to the picture however, I feel like you were more specific and a bit out of topic. I’m not sure how you interpreted the question of the assignment, but I do feel like you should’ve explained in more details how the patient feels about your healthcare system as whole rather than “rehabilitation and treatment in physiotherapy”.
Argument: Claims are presented, and the reflection made is based on how patients feel about rehabilitation in physiotherapy of which I think you should not only focus on rehabilitation only but the healthcare system as whole as I have already stated above.
References: references are present, and the format is correct, well done on that. And they do make me feel like you’re supporting your position.
Writing: Your writing is grammatically correct however, there are some spelling errors (e.g. deceases instead of diseases) in the 1st paragraph.
In overall the piece is good and made me release that patients do value having a family member or someone whom they can rely to during their rehabilitation or treatment can make the whole thing easier.

  2. Hi Åsa! I like the emphasis you put on the importance of social relationships prior to patients healing time and improvement etc.
Content: Your photo relates well to your text and your topic is well supported. The holding hands so clearly implies support from each other which is exactly what you mentioned.
Argument: Your argument presented is logical and the text is clearly constructed and easy to read and follow. Your paragraphs are not too long, and your sentences are short and clear. I like how each paragraph portrays different ideas but still flow with each other.
References: The references were correctly applied, and the in-text references provided supports the argument.
Writing: Your assignment was easily read and understood. However, I did notice a spelling error in your first paragraph, in the last sentence, where the full stop is misplaced. So just have a look at that. Your grammar was used correctly throughout the text.
I enjoyed reading your assignment. Your topic is a very important aspect in the field of Physiotherapy that we sometimes neglect. The way that you touched on it will assist me to focus more on the area of support for the patient.
You reminded me of the importance of the family’s role, but maybe applying the same interaction between the Physiotherapist and the patient, will make it even better. By mentioning the need of physiotherapist’s to also focus on the family and how we can contribute to providing support, is also an important factor that came to my mind. You can even consider going deeper and explain more about the patient’s feelings around relations in the hospital environment in Norway. For example, relationships between the doctor or physiotherapist and the patient. Some questions I thought of to help you collaborate on this are: “Is there a need for better relationships between the doctor/physiotherapist and the patient?”, “Can the patients communicate easily between the health personnel?” and “Are there sufficient support provided by hospital staff members or do they lack caring, interest and service?”. You are welcome to use these questions as a guide.
All in all, it was very interesting for me to learn that the Norwegian taxes support the welfare system. I cannot imagine how more organized your health system must be with regards to having enough equipment and staff members.
Hope this helps! All the best!

References: Your references are really good and it supports your text.
Once again your assignment is really good, easy to read and well understood. It is interesting and which makes it better is the fact that it was easy to read.
