10 things about Oslo

Here is a short list of some of the things that stood out for us during our first few days in Oslo.

  1. Public transport is safe and everyone uses it, not only poor people.
  2. The city seems very peaceful, maybe because it was Sunday today. I felt like everyone was calm and relaxed; no rush and no signs of stress.
  3. People were walking down the streets pulling their luggage. Not something you would see in Cape Town.
  4. The food is quite different from what I am used to.
  5. Norwegians seem to have a thing for statues of nude people.
  6. I realised that I know nothing about the history of Norway. Related to this, I didn’t know that Norway was a monarchy.
  7. Very few shops are open on a Sunday, which seems strange since this is when people are free to do their shopping for the next week.
  8. Scooters are used by so many people, and they have right of way to cars.
  9. There are so many diverse art installations around the city.
  10. There are very few homeless people in the city, and there are shelters for those who are.
