NEGLIGENCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS FOR PATIENTS’ IN HEALTH SYSTEM.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

This picture is representing health system and human rights in patient care. The plant is the human rights in patient care and wall around represent the health system. I opt this as the best photo that is symbolizing how patients needs and rights are violated in health system. Some of the patients rights presented by this picture are the right to have a healthy and safe environment, access to health care center and right not to be abandoned and isolated.

This photo is revealing the issue of discrimination and social exclusion that often underlie abuse against the patients. This is a critical issue, since people who are most likely to suffer from discrimination and social exclusion are the people living with HIV, ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minorities, people who use drugs and people with disabilities in health setting. Often these abuses are related to the perception of groups as deviant or in need of curative forms of treatment leading to horrific abuses in psychiatric facilities, drugs rehabilitation centers, and detention centers of sex workers.

They are likely to have high chances of having sanctions to some health services as they are limited to their freedom and association and denial process due to state of their condition. These groups of people will be having access to services like forceful sterilization to women who live with HIV, force and detention and punishment of people who use drugs and unjustified denial of pain relief. They are always having access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation but due to their social background the physical therapy and rehabilitation is considered as the least need to them.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

According to Cohen and Ezer (2013) human rights in patient refers to the application of human rights principles to the context of patient care. It provides means to examine systemic issue and state responsibility. This principle that applies to patients include both right to the highest attainable standard of health, the right to be free from torture and inhumane treatment to liberty and security of person. It also directs attention to the rights of socially excluded groups to be free from discrimination in the delivery of health care.

Instead of the humane and appropriate health care expectation, patients in many settings encounter a variety forms of abuse that affront basic human dignity and jeopardize health outcomes. These range from general violation of patients right to informed consent, confidentiality, privacy and non-discrimination to more egregious abuses including torture and cruelty, inhuman and degrading treatment.

The Kindley firm (2019) also states that the abuse of the disabled, elder and infirm is on the rise in health system. Unfortunately, most of this population cannot speak or fight for themselves. They are often innocent victims of corporate greed, neglect, isolation, abuse, and violation of patient rights. The common patient rights violation includes; failing to provide quality care and provide proper nursing care, abandoning and isolation of patients, failing to treat the patients with dignity and respect and administering unnecessary psychotropic medication.

According to Peled-Raz (2017) medical law and public health law have both served extensively as instruments of health promotion of patients right by protection and prevent mistreatment’s in the health care system.

Patient’s rights are not respected

  1. This was an interesting post with an important theme. I think the topic reflects the writing of the assignment and the picture works well as a symbol of human rights and the health system. The theme is sad but very important to be aware about, so I think it is very nice that you wrote a text about this. The minority groups deserve the same care as everybody else and by beeing conscious about this we might give them a better encounter with the health system when we come out to work. The text is easy to follow and I understand you arguments. I am not able to check yout references, you need to include them in a list at the bottom of the text by a link or full reference with author and name of the article. If you were to improve the text, you could include how the authorities look at the issue. Maybe you could try to see it from the other point of view and what we can do to reverse this pattern.
Like I said, interesting and important theme, great work!
