The first USSA Staff Soccer and Netball Tournament took place from the 25-27 October this year. It was hosted at the Durban University of Technology where about 40 University of the Western Cape Staff Members participated.
Mr. Tak Wing from the UWC Department of Physiotherapy was the Team Physiotherapist for the soccer team that traveled to Durban. We are also very proud that one of our Fourth Year Students, Mr. Zenzele Msweli, was selected as the physiotherapist for the UWC Staff Netball Team.
The tournament started with group events in which UWC played against Rhodes University, winning 6 – 0. In match two, UWC played against the University of Zululand, beating them with by 3 – 1 and thus proceeding to the semifinals.
In the semifinals UWC played against Durban University of Technology, winning 1 – 0 and ensuring that UWC would be playing in the finals against the University of Limpopo.
Unfortunately, at this late stage of the event, six players were cramping and endurance was running low, with the physiotherapist having to spend a lot of time tending to the players. Limpopo did well to win the game but we’re really proud of the UWC effort at this first national tournament.
